- Application Validity: The application for switching to a Child Student Visa must be submitted no earlier than 3 months before the course start date as outlined in the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
- Course Timing: The course must commence within 28 days following the expiration of your current UK visa (leave to remain).
- CAS Requirements: All requirements related to the CAS must be met.
- Course Requirements: Applicants must fulfill all criteria related to their chosen course of study.

- Issuance by an Approved Sponsor: The CAS must be issued by an independent school whose license is active as of the date the application is reviewed. The student sponsor should be authorized and in good standing.
- Timeliness: The CAS should be issued no more than 6 months prior to the application date. This ensures that the information remains current and relevant.
- Previous Use: The CAS must not have been utilized in a prior application, whether that application was approved or denied. However, it can be used if it was submitted with a previous application that was rejected, rendered void, or withdrawn.
- Sponsor’s Offer: The offer from the student sponsor must still be valid. The CAS should reflect that the offer has not been retracted since its issuance.
- Course Requirements: The CAS must include all necessary details confirming that the course requirements are fulfilled. This ensures that the educational criteria are adequately addressed.
- Financial Information: The CAS must specify the costs associated with accommodation and tuition fees, including any payments already made. This information is crucial for evaluating the financial requirements of the application.
Course of Study Requirements
To meet the criteria for a valid course of study, the applicant must fulfill the following conditions:
- Single Course Requirement: The application must pertain to a single course that adheres to the standards outlined in CS 8.2, unless applying for a combined pre-sessional course that satisfies the criteria specified in CS 11.1.
- Course Criteria for CAS: The course, for which the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) has been issued, must fall into one of these categories:
- National Curriculum Compliance: The course should be delivered according to the National Curriculum standards.
- Recognised Qualification Framework (RQF) Compliance: The course should align with the RQF and must not be a preparatory foundation course intended for entry into higher education.
- Equivalent Academic Status: The course must be recognized as equivalent to the standards of (a) or (b) by Ofsted (England), the Education and Training Inspectorate (Northern Ireland), Education Scotland (Scotland), or Estyn (Wales).
- Independent School Standards: The course should be delivered in accordance with the prevailing standards for Independent School education inspections.
Parental Consent Requirements
To fulfill the parental consent requirements for a visa application, the applicant must secure written consent from one of the following:
- Both parents; or
- A single parent, provided this parent holds sole legal responsibility for the applicant; or
- The applicant’s legal guardian.
The written consent must explicitly confirm support for the following aspects:
- The application itself;
- The applicant’s living and care arrangements in the UK; and
- For entry clearance applications, the applicant’s travel plans and reception arrangements in the UK.
If the applicant will reside with a close relative or private foster carer, this individual must be:
- A British citizen; or
- Settled in the UK.
The intended carer must submit a letter of undertaking that includes:
- The carer’s name, current address, and contact details;
- The address where the applicant will live in the UK, if different from the carer’s current residence;
- Confirmation that the accommodation provided is a private residence and not a commercial establishment such as a hotel or youth hostel;
- Details about the relationship between the applicant’s parent(s) or legal guardian and the intended carer;
- An agreement from the carer regarding the care arrangements for the applicant;
- Evidence that the carer has at least £570 per month available to support and accommodate the applicant for the duration of the course, up to a maximum of 9 months;
- A list of any additional individuals the carer has previously supported; and
- The carer’s signature and the date of the letter of undertaking.
For applicants under the age of 16 who are staying in private foster care, the following must also be provided:
- A copy of the notification letter from the parent, legal guardian, or intended carer to the UK local authority, indicating that the applicant will be under the care of a private foster carer in the UK; and
- Confirmation from the UK local authority acknowledging receipt of the notification and granting permission for the private foster care arrangement.
Financial Requirements for Switching to a Child Student Visa
For applicants transitioning to a Child Student Visa who have been residing in the UK with valid permission for 12 months or more at the time of application, the financial requirement is deemed satisfied. Consequently, no additional funds need to be demonstrated.
For those who have been in the UK for less than 12 months, the following financial evidence is required based on their living arrangements:

Combined Pre-sessional Course Requirements
An independent school may issue a single Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for both a combined pre-sessional course and the main course under the following conditions:
- The applicant must hold an unconditional offer of admission from the independent school.
- The total duration of the pre-sessional course plus the main course at the independent school must not exceed the maximum permitted period as outlined in CS 15.2.
Evidence of Qualification Requirements
Unless exempted under CS 13.1, applicants are required to present evidence of the qualifications used to secure their offer from the student sponsor.
Accepted forms of evidence include:
- Certificates of qualification.
- Official transcripts of results.
- Printouts of qualifications or transcripts from the awarding body’s online verification service.
If an applicant submits a printout from the online verification service, the decision-maker may request the original certificate of qualification or official transcript for further verification.
Differential Evidence Requirement
Applicants seeking to demonstrate compliance with the financial requirement need not submit documents used to secure an offer along with their application. However, such documents may be requested by the decision-maker. This exception applies if the applicant is applying from their country of residence or from within the UK and meets one of the following criteria:
- The applicant possesses a valid passport indicating British National (Overseas) status or one issued by the competent authorities of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, or Taiwan (which should include the identification card number issued by Taiwan’s authorities).

Study Conditions for Child Students: Essential Guidelines
A Child Student is required to enroll in the course or courses specified in their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). However, exceptions apply under the following circumstances:
- If the Child Student has not yet completed the course associated with their CAS, and
- If they begin a new course at the same or a higher level at the sponsoring institution, provided that this new course is not a foundation program designed to prepare for entry into a higher education institution.
The Child Student must continue their studies with the institution that issued their CAS, unless:
- They are enrolled at a partner institution affiliated with their original sponsor, or
- They have submitted an application to remain in the UK supported by a valid CAS, where the application is pending or under administrative review, and they will be studying at the same institution that issued the original CAS.
Supplementary study is permitted.
However, Child Students are not permitted to study at a State School or Academy, except in the following cases:
- Attending a voluntary grammar school with boarding facilities in Northern Ireland, or
- If they have received permission to study at a sponsor institution that transitions to being a State School or Academy during their permitted period, allowing them to complete the course outlined in their CAS.
Conditions and Duration of Grant
The grant of permission will be subject to the following stipulations:
- No entitlement to public funds.
- Employment is prohibited until the Child Student reaches the age of 16, after which work is permitted as outlined in CS 16.1.
- Educational activities are restricted except as detailed in CS 17.
- If Part 10 applies, the individual must register with the police.
The applicant will be granted permission for the course duration specified on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and any additional time based on age, as detailed below:
