Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship Registration
Adults or minors who are British Overseas Territories Citizens, British Nationals (Overseas), British Overseas Citizens, British Subjects under the 1981 Act, or British Protected Persons may qualify for registration as British citizens under section 4(2) of the British Nationality Act 1981. The following conditions must be met:
- Resided in the UK at the start of the 5-year period ending on the application date.
- Were settled in the UK before 1st January 1983.
- Have not been absent from the UK for more than 450 days during the 5-year qualifying period.
- Have not been absent from the UK for more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying.
- Are not subject to immigration restrictions on the date of application.
- Were not subject to immigration restrictions during the 12 months immediately preceding the application date.
- Have not breached immigration laws during the 5-year period leading up to the application.
- If aged 10 or older as of the application date (on or after 4 December 2006), must be of good character, as determined by the Secretary of State.
