Entry Clearance For BNO Visa UK
If you hold British National Overseas (BNO) status and reside in Hong Kong, you may be eligible to apply for entry clearance for the BNO visa to the UK. Applications for BNO visa entry clearance from outside the UK are governed by the provisions outlined in Appendix Hong Kong British National (Overseas) of the Immigration Rules.
Before entering the UK on a BNO visa, there is no requirement to have a job offer in hand. You are free to seek employment once you arrive in the UK. The initial BNO visa can be granted for either 30 months or 5 years. After completing five years of residence in the UK, you will be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as a British National (Overseas). Once you have held ILR for one year, you may apply for British Citizenship through naturalisation or registration as a British Citizen.

Requirements for BNO Visa UK
To successfully apply for entry clearance under the British National (Overseas) (BNO) visa, an applicant must meet the following essential criteria when submitting their application from outside the United Kingdom:
Valid Application Submission
The applicant must ensure that they submit a complete and valid application for BNO visa entry clearance, following the guidelines outlined in the Appendix Hong Kong British National (Overseas) of the Immigration Rules. This includes meeting all documentation and procedural requirements for a successful application.
BN(O) Status Holder Condition
The individual must hold British National (Overseas) status under the provisions of the Hong Kong (British Nationality) Order 1986. This status is a key eligibility requirement for the BNO visa application process.
Ordinary Residence Requirement for Entry Clearance Applications
Applicants seeking entry clearance must prove that they are ordinarily resident in Hong Kong at the time of their application. To meet this requirement, applicants can submit various documents that demonstrate their ordinary residence. These may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- An official Hong Kong Identity Card
- An official Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card
- Detailed, itemized bank statements
- A letter from an employer verifying employment in Hong Kong
- A visa, residence permit, or other immigration documents (colour photocopies are acceptable) confirming residency in Hong Kong
- Educational records, such as a school report
- Tax documents or records
- Rent or mortgage payment records
- Payslips
- Household or utility bills
- A valid tuberculosis certificate
- Passport stamps indicating travel from and return to Hong Kong for overseas travel
Age Requirement
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of submitting their application.
Suitability Requirements
Applicants must meet all suitability requirements and must not fall under any grounds for refusal as outlined in Part 9 of the immigration rules.
Financial Requirement
For those applying for entry clearance, the decision-maker must be convinced that the applicant can financially support and accommodate themselves without recourse to public funds for at least six months. This may include credible third-party support promises. The required funds must be demonstrated as specified in Appendix Finance.
As per paragraph HK 6.2, accommodation will not be considered adequate if it is overcrowded or violates public health regulations.
Tuberculosis Test Certificate Requirement
Applicants for entry clearance as a BN(O) Status Holder must, in accordance with paragraph A39 and Appendix T, submit a valid medical certificate. This certificate must confirm that the applicant has undergone screening for active pulmonary tuberculosis and that they are free from the condition.
Entry Clearance Applications for the Hong Kong BN(O) Route from Overseas
Applicants seeking entry clearance for the Hong Kong BN(O) route can submit their applications from any country outside the UK, provided they can establish their ordinary residence in Hong Kong. For instance, students studying abroad, business professionals working outside Hong Kong, or individuals visiting family abroad who are applying for the Hong Kong BN(O) route typically fulfill the ordinary residence requirement in Hong Kong, as long as they were ordinarily residing in Hong Kong prior to their departure. However, applicants with permanent or settled immigration status in another country may not satisfy the ordinary residence condition for entry clearance.
Duration and Conditions of the BN(O) Visa Grant
Upon approval, applicants will be granted permission for:
- A 5-year period, if the applicant has applied for this duration.
- A 30-month period, if the applicant has applied for this shorter duration.
The grant of permission will be subject to the following conditions:
- No entitlement to public funds.
- Employment is allowed, including self-employment and voluntary work, with the exception of roles as a professional sportsperson (including sports coaching).
- Study is permitted, subject to the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) condition outlined in Appendix ATAS.
