Entry Clearance For Student Visa UK
Are you 16 or older and planning to study in the UK? You can apply for a UK Student Visa to gain entry clearance if you’re enrolling in a Home Office UKVI-approved educational institution. This process adheres to the guidelines set out in Appendix Student of the UK Immigration Rules.
Success in your Student Visa application hinges on proving to the Entry Clearance Officer (ECO) that you are a genuine student. The ECO evaluates various aspects, including your academic qualifications, work experience, explanation for any education gaps, knowledge about your chosen course and institution, and reasons for pursuing education in the UK. It’s common for applications to be refused if the ECO finds the applicant’s responses during the visa interview unconvincing. Proper preparation for this interview is critical to demonstrating your genuineness as a student.
To apply for a UK Student Visa from outside the UK, you must meet the following criteria:
- Admission Offer: Secure a place in a course offered by a licensed student sponsor.
- Financial Readiness: Have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses.
- English Proficiency: Demonstrate your ability to speak, read, write, and understand English.
- Parental Consent: If you’re 16 or 17, provide documented consent from your parents or guardians.

Requirements for Student Visa Entry Clearance Based on Level of Study
For applicants seeking entry clearance for a student visa, the course’s level must meet specific criteria, unless it is a pre-sessional course. When the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is provided by a probationary sponsor, the course must align with one of the following conditions:
- For applicants under 18 years of age:

The course must be accredited at RQF Level 7 or above, or at SCQF Level 11 or above, if delivered through a collaboration between a higher education institution and a research institute.
Study Location Requirements for UK Student Visa Entry Clearance
For a successful student visa application, all coursework must be conducted at the premises of the approved student sponsor or a designated partner institution. Exceptions are made for applicants involved in work placements related to their course, study abroad programs in other countries, or presessional courses. This ensures compliance with the regulations governing student visa entry clearance.
Financial Requirements for UK Student Visa Entry Clearance
For applicants seeking entry clearance or permission to remain in the UK as a Student Union Sabbatical Officer, or for those enrolling in a recognised foundation programme as a doctor or dentist in training, there is no need to demonstrate financial funds. These applicants are deemed to have met the financial requirement for their student visa.
However, for applicants applying for entry clearance or seeking permission to stay who have resided in the UK for less than 12 months, the following financial criteria apply:
(a) Applicants Studying in London
- When the applicant’s course duration includes any fraction of a month, the time period will be rounded up to the nearest full month.
- If the applicant has made an accommodation deposit to their student sponsor for housing provided by them, this deposit (capped at £1,334) can be deducted from the funds required as per ST 12.3.
- Should the applicant have paid any portion of their course fees to their student sponsor, this must be clearly stated on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Alternatively, the applicant should present a receipt from the student sponsor confirming the amount of fees paid.
- Unless the applicant is depending on a student loan or receiving support from a Government or international sponsorship agency, they must demonstrate that the required funds have been maintained for a minimum of 28 consecutive days, as outlined in Appendix Finance, FIN 7.1 to FIN 7.3.
- Unless ST 22.1. applies, the applicant must prove that they meet the financial criteria specified in Appendix Finance.
English Language Proficiency Requirement
To meet the English language proficiency criteria, applicants must demonstrate their ability in all four language components—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, meeting the following standards:
- Level B2: For applicants enrolled in a course at or above the UK bachelor’s degree level.
- Level B1: For those pursuing a pre-sessional course or a programme below the UK bachelor’s degree level.
Applicants must provide evidence of their compliance with the English language requirements as outlined in Appendix English Language.
- If the sponsor has assessed the student’s language proficiency, they must clearly indicate this assessment along with the method used on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
- For cases requiring a Secure English Language Test (SELT), the CAS must include the name of the test provider, the unique reference number, and the score for each language component (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
Combined Pre-sessional Course Requirement for Higher Education
A higher education provider with a proven history of compliance can issue a single Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for both a combined pre-sessional course and a main degree-level course, provided the following conditions are met:
- The pre-sessional course must not exceed three months in duration.
- The main course must commence no later than one month after the pre-sessional course concludes.
If the applicant meets the English language requirement at ST 13.1 with a minimum of level B2, the CAS must clearly indicate that the applicant has received an unconditional offer for the main course.
In cases where the applicant meets the English language requirement at ST 13.1 with a minimum of level B1, the CAS must confirm that the student sponsor is assured that the applicant will achieve at least level B2 upon completion of the pre-sessional course.
Work Placement Requirement
Courses offering a work placement must culminate in an accredited qualification, with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) issued by a recognized sponsor, excluding probationary sponsors.
The work placement must be evaluated as an essential component of the course and should not exceed one-third of the course’s total duration, unless there is a statutory requirement or if exceptions such as ST 17.3 apply.
For courses at the degree level or higher offered by a reputable higher education provider, either domestically or abroad, the work placement duration must not surpass half of the total course length.
Maximum Period of Study for Student Visa Applicants
When pursuing a course below degree level, permission for study under the Student route should not result in the applicant being granted more than two years, starting from the age of 18, unless specified conditions outlined in ST 19.2 are met.
For courses below degree level, if the program mandates a regulatory requirement by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency that necessitates at least 12 months of sea-based study, the applicant’s permission must not exceed three years on the Student route from the age of 18 for such courses.
In the case of degree-level courses, permission should not extend beyond five years under the Student route from the age of 18, unless the course falls under the exceptions mentioned in ST 19.4.
The five-year study limit at degree level will not be applicable if the applicant holds a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for a course in one of the following disciplines:
- Architecture
- Medicine
- Dentistry
- Veterinary Medicine and Science
- Music (at a Conservatoires UK-affiliated music college)
- Law (where the applicant has completed a degree-level course or higher and is applying for one of the following programs):
- A law conversion course accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board in England and Wales
- A Master of Laws (MLaw) in Northern Ireland
- An accelerated graduate LLB in Scotland
Additionally, if the applicant has previously been granted permission as a postgraduate doctor or dentist, their total period of stay should not exceed 3 years as a postgraduate in those fields.
For calculating the total permission period under sections ST 19.1 to ST 19.5, any time granted on the student route, including extensions under section 3C of the Immigration Act 1971, will contribute to the total duration of stay.
Required Documents for Obtaining an Offer
Applicants must provide verifiable evidence of the qualifications or references used to secure an offer from the student sponsor, except in the following cases:
- The applicant is applying for a degree-level course or higher and is sponsored by a recognized higher education provider with a proven history of compliance.
- The criteria under ST 22.1 apply.
The documentation provided as evidence for each qualification must meet one of the following requirements:
- The official certificate(s) of qualification.
- The transcript of results.
- A printout of the qualification or transcript from the awarding body’s online verification service.
If the applicant submits a printout of qualifications or transcript results from the awarding body’s online service, the decision-maker may request the applicant to provide the original certificate of qualification or transcript of results for further verification.
Parental Consent Criteria for Applicants Aged 16 or 17
For applicants between the ages of 16 and 17, obtaining written consent is mandatory. This consent must come from:
- Both parents, or
- A single parent, provided that parent holds sole legal responsibility for the applicant, or
- The applicant’s legal guardian.
The written consent should explicitly confirm approval for the following:
- The applicant’s visa application,
- The applicant’s living and care arrangements in the UK,
- If the application pertains to entry clearance, the applicant’s travel details, as well as their reception and accommodation arrangements upon arrival in the UK.
Differential Evidence Requirement for Financial and Document Submission
When applying for immigration from within the UK or from a country of residence, the applicant may not be required to provide certain documents used to obtain an offer, although they might still be requested by the decision-maker. The evidence to demonstrate the applicant meets the financial requirement should be submitted with the application only if necessary. However, this requirement does not apply if the applicant satisfies any of the following conditions:
- The applicant holds a valid passport that indicates their registration as a British National (Overseas) or was issued by the competent authorities of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, or Taiwan. This includes the identification card number issued by the competent authority in Taiwan.
- The applicant is a national of any of the following countries:
Australia | Austria | Bahrain | Barbados | Belgium | Botswana | Brazil | Brunei | Bulgaria | Cambodia | Canada | Chile | China | Croatia | Cyprus | Czech Republic | Denmark | Dominican Republic | Estonia | Finland | France | Germany | Greece | Hungary | Iceland | Indonesia | Ireland | Italy | Japan | Kazakhstan | Kuwait | Latvia | Liechtenstein | Lithuania | Luxembourg | Malaysia | Malta | Mauritius | Mexico | Netherlands | New Zealand | Norway | Oman | Peru | Poland | Portugal | Qatar | Romania | Serbia | Singapore | Slovakia | Slovenia | South Korea | Spain | Sweden | Switzerland | Thailand | Tunisia | United Arab Emirates (UAE) | United States of America (USA).
Study Conditions for Students: Ensuring Compliance with Visa Regulations
Students must adhere to the study conditions specified by their student sponsor, as outlined in the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). A student is permitted to study only with the sponsor who assigned the CAS, except in the following circumstances:
- Partner Institution: If the student is enrolled at a partner institution of their assigned sponsor.
- Permission to Stay: If the student has submitted an application to extend their stay as a Student, supported by a valid CAS, and:
- The application is still under consideration, or
- Any administrative review regarding the application has not been concluded.
In these cases, the student must continue studying under the sponsorship of the institution that issued the CAS.
Additionally, a student is permitted to study only the course(s) for which the CAS was assigned, unless specified otherwise by ST 27.3.
A student may continue their studies on a new course with their existing student sponsor under the following conditions:
- The student sponsor must be a higher education provider that has demonstrated a history of compliance.
- The student must not have completed the course for which the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) was issued.
- The new course must not be at a lower qualification level than the one originally assigned to the CAS.
- The new course must be at the degree level or higher.
- Any new degree-level course must be completed within the current period of leave.
- The student sponsor must confirm that the new course is either related to the previous course listed on the CAS or aligns with the student’s genuine career ambitions.
Additionally, students are permitted to participate in a study abroad programme as part of their course, provided it is a required and assessed component of the course stated in the CAS.
Supplementary study is also allowed.
All study is subject to the conditions outlined in Appendix ATAS.
The student is prohibited from studying at a State School or Academy, except for voluntary grammar schools with boarding in Northern Ireland. However, if the student has received permission to study at a sponsor that later becomes a State School or Academy during the permitted period, they may continue their studies for the course originally assigned to the CAS.

English Language Requirements for Student Visa Entry Clearance
To qualify for a UK Student Visa, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the English language based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, covering all four components: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- For courses at UK Bachelor’s degree level or above: Applicants must meet at least B2 level proficiency.
- For pre-sessional or courses below UK Bachelor’s degree level: Applicants must meet at least B1 level proficiency.
This requirement aligns with the standards outlined in the Appendix English Language of the UK visa guidelines.
- If the sponsoring institution has verified the applicant’s English language proficiency, they must clearly indicate this and specify the method of assessment on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
- In cases where a Secure English Language Test (SELT) is necessary, the test provider’s name, unique reference number, and the scores for each language component (reading, writing, listening, speaking) must be included in the CAS.
Combined Pre-sessional Course Requirement
A higher education provider with a proven compliance record may issue a single Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for both a combined pre-sessional course and the main degree-level course, provided the following conditions are met:
- The pre-sessional course does not exceed 3 months in duration.
- The main course begins within one month of the pre-sessional course’s completion.
If the applicant’s English proficiency meets at least a level B2, as outlined in ST 13.1, the CAS must confirm that the applicant has an unconditional offer for the main course.
In cases where the applicant meets the minimum requirement of level B1 for English proficiency under ST 13.1, the CAS must state that the student sponsor is confident the applicant will achieve at least a level B2 by the conclusion of the pre-sessional course.
Work Placement Criteria for UK Student Visa
For courses that incorporate a work placement, it is essential that the program results in a recognized qualification, and the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is issued by a valid student sponsor, not a probationary sponsor.
The work placement must be considered a fundamental component of the course, and its duration should not exceed one-third of the overall length of the program. Exceptions to this rule exist in specific cases, such as statutory requirements or when ST 17.3 applies.
For degree-level courses or higher offered by an accredited higher education provider with a proven track record of compliance, or by an overseas higher education institution, the work placement can extend up to half of the total course duration.
Maximum Study Duration for Students
For students enrolling in courses below degree level, the total period of study on the Student route should not exceed two years from the applicant’s 18th birthday, unless specific provisions outlined in ST 19.2 apply.
However, if the course involves a mandatory 12-month sea service as part of a program regulated by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the maximum study duration can be extended to a total of three years for courses below degree level, starting from the applicant’s 18th birthday.
For degree-level courses, applicants are permitted a maximum of five years of study from the age of 18. This is subject to exceptions listed in ST 19.4, including courses in specialized fields.
The five-year cap does not apply to applicants pursuing specific degree-level courses if they have been assigned a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for one of the following programs:
- Architecture
- Medicine
- Dentistry
- Veterinary Medicine and Science
- Music at a Conservatoires UK member institution
- Law: Applicants who have already completed a degree-level law course and are applying for advanced law courses, such as:
- A law conversion course validated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board (England and Wales)
- A Masters in Law (MLaw) in Northern Ireland
- An accelerated graduate LLB in Scotland
If an applicant has already been granted permission as a postgraduate doctor or dentist, the total period of permission for these courses should not exceed three years.
When calculating the total duration of permission granted under sections ST 19.1 to ST 19.5, any period of permission granted under the student route and extended under section 3C of the Immigration Act 1971 will count toward the total allowed duration.
Documents Required for Entry Clearance for Student Visa UK Application
When applying for entry clearance for a student visa to the UK, applicants must present valid evidence of the qualifications or references they used to secure an offer of admission to a recognized course. This documentation is essential, except in cases where:
- The applicant is applying for a degree-level or higher course and is sponsored by a higher education institution with a proven history of regulatory compliance.
- Specific conditions under ST 22.1 apply.
The required evidence for each qualification should consist of one of the following:
- The official qualification certificate(s);
- The academic transcript of results;
- A printout of the qualification or transcript results from the awarding body’s online verification service.
In instances where a printout from the awarding body’s online checking service is provided, the decision-maker may request the original qualification certificate or transcript as additional proof.
Parental Consent Criteria
Applicants aged 16 or 17 must provide written consent from one of the following:
- Both parents, or
- A single parent with sole legal responsibility for the applicant, or
- The applicant’s legal guardian.
The written consent should confirm approval for the following aspects:
- The application itself.
- The applicant’s accommodation and care arrangements within the UK.
- If applying for entry clearance, confirmation of the applicant’s travel to the UK, along with reception and accommodation arrangements upon arrival.
Differentiated Evidence Requirements
When applying for a UK Student Visa, applicants may not need to submit certain documents with their application, such as those used to secure an offer. However, these documents might be requested by the decision maker if the applicant meets specific criteria.
If the applicant is residing in the country from which they are applying, or if applying from within the UK, they must either:
- Hold a valid passport showing registration as a British National (Overseas) or one issued by the competent authorities of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, or Taiwan (including the identification card number issued by Taiwan’s competent authority); or
- Be a national of one of the following countries or territories:
Australia | Austria | Bahrain | Barbados | Belgium | Botswana | Brazil | Brunei | Bulgaria | Cambodia | Canada | Chile | China | Croatia | Cyprus | Czech Republic | Denmark | Dominican Republic | Estonia | Finland | France | Germany | Greece | Hungary | Iceland | Indonesia | Ireland | Italy | Japan | Kazakhstan | Kuwait | Latvia | Liechtenstein | Lithuania | Luxembourg | Malaysia | Malta | Mauritius | Mexico | Netherlands | New Zealand | Norway | Oman | Peru | Poland | Portugal | Qatar | Romania | Serbia | Singapore | Slovakia | Slovenia | South Korea | Spain | Sweden | Switzerland | Thailand | Tunisia | UAE | USA.
