UK Ancestry Visa
UK Ancestry Visa UK (Priority & Super Priority Service For Faster Decision)
The UK Ancestry visa is designed for Commonwealth citizens aged 17 or older who wish to live and work in the UK, provided they have at least one grandparent born in the UK or the Islands. This visa route also allows the dependent partner and children of a UK Ancestry migrant to apply to stay in the UK with the main applicant. Applications for a UK Ancestry visa must be made in line with the requirements set out in the Immigration Rules Appendix UK Ancestry.
It’s important to note that switching into the UK Ancestry visa from inside the UK is not permitted. The initial application must be submitted from outside the UK.
As a settlement visa route, UK Ancestry visa holders are eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after completing five years of continuous residence in the UK, with the application typically submitted up to 28 days before reaching the five-year mark.

Successful applicants are typically granted a visa for 5 years. Towards the end of this period, you may apply for either an extension of stay or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

Extension of UK Ancestry Visa
If you are currently in the UK on a UK Ancestry visa but do not yet qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as a UK Ancestry Migrant, you can apply to extend your visa for another 5 years. While many applicants choose to apply for ILR after completing 5 years in the UK under this visa, some may opt for an extension instead. Applications for a UK Ancestry visa extension must follow the guidelines outlined in Appendix UK Ancestry of the Immigration Rules and are submitted using the FLR (IR) application form.
There are various reasons why you might choose to extend your stay rather than apply for settlement, including:
- Not meeting the English language and Life in the UK requirement for ILR.
- Having broken your continuity of residence, which prevents meeting the 5-year continuous stay requirement.
- Personal preference or being unaware of eligibility for ILR.
